- Predictive analytics: Identifying patterns in operational data. Requires clean data and clear success metrics.
Each has different infrastructure requirements. Confusing them leads to expensive mismatches between the tool and the problem. And before any AI conversation, institutions often need to address a more foundational question — who actually owns the infrastructure AI will run on.
The Question You Must Answer First: Where Does Your Data Go?
This is the question most vendors don't want you to ask — because their answer is unfavourable. Most commercial AI tools (ChatGPT API, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot) process your input on foreign servers. When your staff puts a patient record, legal document, or government file into one of these tools, that data travels to and is processed by a server in a data centre you don't control, under terms of service that do not prioritise your jurisdiction's data protection obligations.
